Mugler Cologne (2001)
by Thierry Mugler

Basenotes says...

Inspired by the clean fresh scent of a soap from Mugler's childhood, Cologne was designed to appeal to people who don't really like fragrance!
Cologne draws on the tradition of early colognes, it is fresh and citrus-sy and is the olfactory opposite of the distinctive scent of Angel.
The scent contains a mystery ingredient, only known as 'S'... maybe it's Sausage?, Salmon?, Soap?, Selotape?.. or maybe its 'S-Perfume' all over again!
The bath line includes a scent free natural crystalline alum stone deodorant, which lasts an age, and you can add your own fragrance too.

Fragrance notes

Bergamot, Neroli, Petitgrain, Orange flower, "S", White Musk.

This is so fresh and youthful - lime and soap over some pungent musk that has a unique "kick." Like it's neon color, MC is so bright and quirky that it instantly puts me in a better mood. IMO, it's not as soapy as others say though - for example, it's not that fresh out of the shower feeling or soapy suds, but more of a crisp and clean citrus feeling. Sillage and strength are low, but that's how it's supposed to be. In Mugler's words, it's a cologne for people who don't like cologne.

I used to wonder why I couldn't stop sniffing this on myself until I found out what the "s" note is from fellow Basenoter Dimitri's blog. The secret was surprising, yet... not so surprising. As Dimitri explains, underneath the citrus soap is one of the dirtiest notes imaginable... Quite an ironic masterpiece in my books.

If you thought this was too quirky, try Original Vetiver by Creed. At twice the price, the vibe is similar, with slightly better quality ingredients and it's longer lasting. The biggest and most noticeable difference between the two would have to be that OV doesn't have the dirty musk base of Mugler Cologne.

If you're looking for a clean and fresh fragrance with low sillage, you might also like "CKbe," which also smells clean and green like Mugler Cologne's, but smells different altogether.

I wore this stuff all summer- it's great for when you just want a hint of freshness, nothing heavy.
For those complaining of sillage, i suggest a combo of cologne and the body lotion (which I use as aftershave every so often!).
Also, the little sample soaps that accompany this stuff are great... my friends all come out of my bathroom smelling their hands.

Highly recommended, though I'd suggest waiting until next summer.

I do like Creed's Original Vetiver and while I do notice a small similarity, there is also a significant difference. While I prefer OV, this is still a very nice fragrance for the short time that it lasts. Its very fresh and clean. Perfect for a summer day or for just hanging out in shorts or jeans and a t-shirt. It just smells fresh and slightly grassy. I like it alot. Moisturizer helps with the sillage.

I purchased this fragrance from all the positive reviews, and since i like citrus/clean smelling fragrances.
I received it yesterday, and couldn't wait to try it. I am not as keen in the techno-lingo in describing fragrances as most here, but when i first applied it i was sort of overwhelmed, and thought for a moment that i wouldn't like it, but i gave it a while, then the smell really mellowed out to a really pleasant/soothing clean smelling fragrance (which is what i was looking for!).
I really appreciate those who take the time to post reviews as it really helped in finding this gem of a fragrance!

"This really is for people who don't want to project themselves too much, but still want to be fresh smelling when someone gets uncomfortably close to them." - jalexhrovat

Absolutely, however...

There are plenty of other fragrances that will do that.

This is WAY too weak and simply isn't worth paying for. And I don't think Al Morillas made this, I think it was Ted Ivory. Seriously, copying the smell of 150 year old soap is bad form. There are vague hints of other smells in there, but it's 99.44% ripped off (tell 'em Fred), and it has no sillage even before the hour mark, at which point it vanishes completely.

The part where this is a soapy cologne is GOOD. The part where this shares some elements from Angel is BAD (it's as if he has used the same base - "Muglinnaire?" ) and that really put me off. I am a huge fan of Mugler's Alien, but I'm in the "makes me feel nauseous"-camp for Angel, unfortunately. So it's a resounding NO.
